Tower „New Gate”

The Tower „New Gate” in Motovun is a 17th-century fortification featuring historical defensive architecture and a lapidary collection of Roman tombstones and coats of arms.

Tower "New Gate" - The tower, also known as "New Gate" according to the inscription above the exit portal, got its present appearance with a renovation in 1607 during the podestà of Marco Pasqualagio. The tower is connected to the communal palace, and through it to the walls of the citadel. Above the entrance and exit portals, above the former city gates, machicolations were built through which the defenders threw heavy objects at the enemy, and most often poured hot oil and boiling water over them. In 1931, a lapidary was arranged in the passage under the arch of the tower, in which Roman tombstones (stelae) found in the vicinity of Motovun and the oldest coats of arms from the history of Motovun, a border guard from the forest of Sv. Marka (Motovun forest) etc. are exhibited.
